As far back as 1999 India has been trying to curb its mounting plastic problem. But successive pieces of legislation have been watered down by industry efforts to create loopholes for single-use items and render supposedly strong mandatory measures toothless.

In this separate investigation into the situation in India, we look at the problem of multi-layered packaging, the corporate reponse to the plastic crisis in India from several consumer brands, and make recommendations for Indian policymakers.
