Tax backlash
Plastic is a huge problem in Uruguay. Montevideo, the capital and most populous city, generates 1,600 tonnes of household waste per day, and nationally almost 1 million beverage containers end up in landfills or the natural environment every day.
Here the industry is more brazen in its narrative of directly blaming consumers for plastic pollution, rather than shouldering the responsibility to improve collection, mandatory recycled content or true producer responsibility.
